Department of Geology

Message from Department head

Department of Geology was launched in 2015G.C with other departments in College of Natural and computational Science. The department has started its role by enrolling 46 students and within 3 instructors in the academic year. Now, there are 14 instructors and 3 administrative staff in the department. Among 14 instructors, 12 instructors are at work and 2 instructors are attending their MSc programs at different universities in Ethiopia whereas 1 administrative staff is attending MSc program at higher University of Ethiopia. Currently, in the department, there are 60 students who are attending their study in undergraduate programs. The department is on the final stage of launching MSc program in Engineering Geology. In addition, the department also has a plan to launch MSc program in Hydrogeology.

Department has strong curriculum to achieve the mission and vision of the University by conducting training and research in the wide areas of geosciences. To advance this, the department has collaboration with local partners and institutions. These have led to significant contribution in the development of human resources in geosciences and understanding the geology and geologic resources of Ethiopia. Notable contributions include generation of knowledge in the geodynamics of the East African Rift, the petrogenesis of various rocks of Ethiopia, the reconstruction of paleo-environmental setting of Ethiopia, the inventory/baseline survey of earth materials and earth resources of Ethiopia and characterization of engineering construction site. Researchers in the area and graduates from each institution have been contributing in sectors such as geological surveying, groundwater, construction, energy, mining, and environment.

Therefore, I am delighted to represent this approaching department which is dedicated to provide quality education, produce qualified manpower, conduct problem solving researches and community services. I hope everybody will give positive idea for the raised questions in different directions to explore our department. I hope you will visit our website and explore our department.
