Design of Water Supply Scheme

Statement of Problem

Hossana Town water supply system is responsible for supplying water for the town. Water supply distribution is providing inadequate services to its customers. These include low service coverage and irregular mode of water distribution characterized by long period of cut-offs and frequent water disruptions. The problems could be attributed to limited or scarce water sources, inadequate hydraulic capacity and aging water distribution infrastructure, coupled with technical incompetence and inefficient management. The consequences of poor water supply services in terms of health and financial costs especially to the low-income households could be enormous and could affect national economic development.

Facing with the challenges of limited resources and also due to increasing demand for water, there is a need to establish how GWSD has been performing against a set of standard and internationally accepted key performance indicators. Systematic investigation will help to establish the position of GWSD in terms of its technical, financial and management capacity and develop mechanisms and improve the overall capacity of the utility to deliver better services. Moreover, the perception of residents regarding the quality of service delivery by GWSD needs to be established and assessed as there is no as such a regulatory body to protect the interests of consumers. As there are no previous studies on the subject, this study will identify possible technical problems with regard to hydraulic performance and water losses and thereby recommend possible solutions..
