Housing and Settlement Study

Abstract

This research is focus on studying formation and transformation of housing and human settlement patternin core and outskirt of hosanna town. Housing is one of the main challenge of our universe. The supply of housing is not satisfied yet compared to ever growing population of the world. The case is very worse in developing countries like Ethiopia.

Rapid urbanization without proper planning and sufficient provision of housing and infrastructures creates squatterand informal settlement. Which will eventually resulted with creation of slum in the most of emerging cities.

Population increase due to migration of people from rural to urban areas increase the need of new housing in the cities and towns. Shortage of housing force these people to settle informally or squat by invading farmland. When the towns getlarger migrants used to live along street sides, under bridges, highways, church yards dwelling plastic shed beneath fence of offices, churches, residences and existing public structures.as soon as they come from rural area they settle on unoccupied open space which is public property and suitable space for begging and some other activity. Both who own plot of land and those sit beneath permanent structures are informs who have no legal recognition by government. When it gets its final complexity informal settlement result with slum creation, in area where there is no adequate service and infrastructure.

General objective of these research is to suggest better housing and planning strategy by studying housing and human settlement trend and current development situation of hosanna town.so that these research consider selected rural areas of hadiya zone to take important lessons from existing vernacular.
